VACUUM TUBE DEVICE FOR INCREASING THE INTENSITY OF AVAILABLE LIGHT
Image intensifiers; Image intensification; Image intensifier tube; Image amplifier
  • Photons from a low-light source enter the objective lens (on the left) and strike the photocathode (gray plate). The photocathode (which is negatively biased) releases electrons which are accelerated to the higher-voltage microchannel plate (red). Each electron causes multiple electrons to be released from the microchannel plate. The electrons are drawn to the higher-voltage phosphor screen (green). Electrons that strike the phosphor screen cause the phosphor to produce photons of light viewable through the eyepiece lenses.

¦ noun a device used to make a brighter version of an image on a photoelectric screen.

Wikipedia

Image intensifier

An image intensifier or image intensifier tube is a vacuum tube device for increasing the intensity of available light in an optical system to allow use under low-light conditions, such as at night, to facilitate visual imaging of low-light processes, such as fluorescence of materials in X-rays or gamma rays (X-ray image intensifier), or for conversion of non-visible light sources, such as near-infrared or short wave infrared to visible. They operate by converting photons of light into electrons, amplifying the electrons (usually with a microchannel plate), and then converting the amplified electrons back into photons for viewing. They are used in devices such as night-vision goggles.

Examples of use of reproduced image
1. The photo of Che by Alfredo Korda is the most reproduced image in history but it still has power.
2. Lawyers say it will be an uphill struggle to deter non–photographic use of such a widely reproduced image, other than in countries such as Italy where laws protect image rights.
3. Such victories speak to a sense of Arab pride that is wounded at every turn by the diplomatic and military predominance of Israel, by the corruption and craven behaviour of many Arab governments, and by the perceived Islamophobia of Washington‘s "war on terror". Nasrallah‘s public statements and oft–reproduced image appear to be aimed at this sense of Arab pride.
4. Hardly surprising, then, that the photos they brought back, first of an "Earthrise" and then of the whole Earth – still the most reproduced image we have, and no one‘s quite sure who took it – are credited with kick–starting the environmental movement in the early 1'70s.
5. Lawyers say it will be an uphill struggle to deter non–photographic use of such a widely reproduced image, other than in countries like Italy where laws protect image rights. –– Aleida March The famous picture was shot by Alberto Diaz, a fashion photographer better known as Korda, at a funeral for victims of the explosion of a French freighter transporting weapons to Cuba one year after Fidel Castro‘s revolution triumphed with the help of Guevara.
